All Saints St. Luke the Evangelist San Michele Arcangelo

Antioch - Rome (?) - First Century AD

Luke, evangelist and author of the Acts of the Apostles, is called "the writer of the meekness of Christ." Paul calls him "dear doctor", a companion of his missionary journeys, the comfort of his imprisonment. His gospel, which highlights the universality of salvation and favor of Christ to the poor, offers original testimonies as the infancy narratives, the parables of mercy and annotations that reflect sensitivity to the sick and suffering. In the book of Acts describes the ideal figure of the Church, faithful to the teaching of the Apostles, in communion of love, the breaking of bread and in prayers. (Aug. Roma)

Martyrology: Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist, who, according to tradition, born in Antioch of a pagan family and doctor by profession, was converted to faith in Christ . Become very dear companion of St. Paul the Apostle, arranged with care in the Gospel all the works and teachings of Jesus and became the scribe of the meekness of Christ, and narrated in the Acts of the Apostles of the early life of the Church until the first visit of Paul to Rome.

But that has to do Theophilus? Who knows? We have always seems a bit 'unfair this unknown character, we see praised and revered at the beginning of Luke's Gospel and his Acts of the Apostles. The answer lies in training the Hellenistic author. Made with the dedication to Theophilus, which was to be a Christian, he monitors the use of eminent classical writers, who in fact were used to dedicate their works to distinguished personalities.
Luke, in fact, studied, is a doctor, and among the evangelists is the only non-jew. Perhaps it comes from Antioch (now Antakya, Turkey). A convert, a former pagan, that Paul of Tarsus is associated in the apostolate, calling him a "fellow worker" (Philemon 24) and indicated in the Letter to the Colossians as "dear doctor" (4:14). The doctor followed Paul everywhere, even in prison twice. And the second, while in prison waiting for a hard punishment, Paul writes to Timothy that everyone abandoned him. Minus one. "Only Luke is with me" (2 Timothy 4:11). And this is the last certain notice of the evangelist.
Luke wrote his Gospel for the Christian converts from paganism. He has never seen Jesus, and is based on witnesses, possibly including some women, among the first who responded to the ad. There are a large number of women in his gospel, beginning of course with the Mother of Jesus: Luke is careful in his words, his gestures, his silence. Jesus He stresses the invincible compassion, and strength that coming from him "healed them all" universal doctor Jesus bent over all the suffering. Almighty and Jesus "meek" as Dante believed in the words of Luke.
The Acts of the Apostles tell of the first expansion outside of the Christian Church of Palestine, with the problems and trauma of this universalization. In the second part is dominant in the apostolic work of Paul, from Asia to Europe and here Luke shows appealing narrator when he describes the trip, storm, shipwreck, good reception and persecution, turmoil and disputes, arrests, from the port of Caesarea to Rome and its prisons.
According to legend, Luke was also a painter and, in particular, the author of numerous portraits of the Madonna. Other legends say that after the death of Paul, he was going to preach outside Rome, and we talk about many places. Too many. In reality, nothing is known of him after the words of Paul to Timothy from prison. But Luke's Gospel continues to be announced along with those of Matthew, Mark and John all over the world. And with it also the Acts of the Apostles. In the Liturgy of the Word during Mass and in all languages, really Luke continues to preach, even to this day, constantly.
